Getting Rid of Stains in Your Smile

Smiling woman receiving professional teeth whitening in Fort Worth

After years of drinking coffee, eating sugary foods, and consuming other teeth-staining foods (such as soy sauce and tomato-based sauces), you might be feeling less-than-stellar about your smile. The good news is that teeth whitening in Fort Worth can do more than just brighten your smile. It can make you feel more self-confident as well.

But those over-the-counter teeth whitening kits might do more harm than good. Here at Bonds Ranch Family Dentistry, we offer teeth whitening from friendly and caring professionals. Read on to find out more about teeth whitening and what to expect during your first appointment at our lovely Fort Worth dental office.

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

There are some clear benefits to having your teeth professionally whitened. The most obvious benefit is the aesthetic one; it can make your teeth look whiter and brighter, thereby de-aging your smile. And, of course, this can enhance your overall self-confidence.

You might also be seen as more attractive. In fact, a study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found that 96% of adults believe that a beautiful smile makes someone more attractive. It might also enhance your work and social opportunities. Many people feel that an attractive smile can help make a superb first impression. A whiter smile can also give the impression that you take good care of yourself.

Teeth whitening is actually one of the most affordable forms of cosmetic dentistry. Over-the-counter kits are cheap, sure, but even in-office appointments are considerably more affordable than other treatments. It is also a lot less invasive. There is hardly ever any pain involved in it, and you get to relax while Dr. Presley does the work. Appointments are usually short, and side effects are few. Results come quickly, and there is hardly any prep work involved pre-visit.

Risks of Teeth Whitening

As Dr. Presley will tell you during your consult, there are very few risks surrounding teeth whitening. Most of the risks come with using over-the-counter products. There are, however, a small number of people who might not benefit from teeth whitening. Those who have peroxide or chemical sensitivities should avoid getting it done. A higher whitening agent might not be ideal for someone who has sensitive teeth or gums.

Some gum irritation might happen. Also, results cannot be fully guaranteed since you have to factor in genetics, lifestyle, and age. This is especially true if you use an at-home kit. If you get bleach into an unfilled cavity or crack, the results can be painful.

What to Expect with Teeth Whitening

At your first teeth whitening appointment, you will be treated with a hydrogen peroxide gel that is stronger than your run-of-the-mill at-home kit. Dr. Presley will check your teeth prior to applying to make sure you have no surprise issues. Our team will apply a muco-protectant gel to keep your tissues safe from the peroxide and get the gel on your teeth. After that, expect to sit underneath a special light for about 20 minutes. Expect to go through at least two rounds of this. The exact number of rounds will depend on the treatment system selected.
