You\u2019ll find some common summer activities that can hurt your smile and tips for protection while enjoying the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Swimming in Chlorinated Pools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Swimming is a great way to cool off during the summer, but spending too much time in the pool can be harmful to your teeth. Prolonged exposure to chlorine can cause enamel erosion, making your pearly whites more sensitive and prone to cavities. To minimize this risk, rinse your mouth with fresh water after swimming. If you own the pool, be sure to maintain its chlorine levels as recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Playing Contact Sports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With sunny, clear skies outdoor sports like soccer, basketball, and football are excellent summer activities. However, they also come with a high risk of dental injuries, including chipped or knocked-out teeth. Always wear a mouthguard when participating in contact sports to protect your teeth from impact. Even the cheapest mouthguards are better than nothing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drinking Sugary Beverages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hot weather often means reaching for refreshing drinks like sodas, sports drinks, and sweetened iced teas. While these bevvies can quench your thirst, they also have high levels of sugar and acids that can erode enamel and lead to cavities. You can still indulge but try to alternate between sticky drinks and water to keep your teeth healthy and your body hydrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chewing on Ice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chewing on ice cubes is a common way to cool down, but it can be extremely damaging to your teeth. The hardness of ice can cause teeth to crack or chip and can also dislodge dental fillings. Instead of chewing ice cubes, try sucking on them or using crushed ice to avoid temptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skipping Oral Hygiene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the relaxed schedule of summer, it\u2019s easy to become a little lazy with your oral hygiene routine. However, skipping brushing and flossing can lead to plaque buildup, cavities, and gum disease if done often enough.
